This course (1 hour Live Webinar, Synchronous Distance Learning) will look at the importance of school social workers in working with unhoused families and services to remove barriers to education. School social workers play a unique role in the lives of students and families experiencing homelessness. Through this session, we will work together to discuss the McKinney-Vento Law and the ways in which school social workers can provide wrap-around services to address not only housing insecurity, but also the social, emotional, and educational concerns associated with being unhoused. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify and increase understanding of the federal McKinney-Vento Law
  2. Participants will discover and recognize the rights afforded to youth and families experiencing homelessness. 
  3. Participants will translate McKinney-Vento Law to gain a greater understanding of the ways in which school social workers can address the needs of youths and families experiencing homelessness. 

Speakers:  

Courtney Porter, MSW, MEd, LSSW (she/her)  

As a twenty-four year veteran of the educational system, Ms. Porter has spent the past eleven years as the School Social Worker, McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison, and DCYF Point of Contact for SAU 6 in Claremont, NH, her hometown!! As the President of the New Hampshire School Social Workers Association, she advocates for students and families all over the state. She also serves as the School Social Worker representative to the NH Board of Mental Health Practice. Additionally, Ms. Porter is a member of the NH Department of Education's McKinney Vento state training team.

School Social Work Association of America, 1789, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. School Social Work Association of America maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 7/27/2023-7/27/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 1 CE continuing education credit. 

Certificates will be emailed to participants upon successful completion of the webinar and completion of the course evaluation. Participants must stay the entire length of the webinar and complete the evaluation to receive credit. No assignments will be required for this course. System Requirements-- Participants must have a computer and audio to participate in the webinar. Attending by phone is strongly discouraged and may result in not receiving CEs.
