Addressing Online Child Exploitation in K-12 Schools: Empowering School Social Workers in Prevention Efforts

The threat of online child exploitation is pervasive and growing, especially as digital technologies advance, and students spend increased time online at home and at school. School social workers can play a role in combatting online child exploitation through proactive strategies and holistic school safety programs. Join representatives from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s School Safety Task Force and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Crimes Center to explore current threats and trends related to online child exploitation as well as evidence-based practices and the latest federal resources designed to protect K-12 students from online child exploitation. The presenters will share real-world case examples from national and local investigations along with research-informed strategies and actionable recommendations for prevention. Additionally, this session will include information on grooming tactics, sextortion, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), peer-to-peer online abuse, and steps to take if a child is a victim.

Target Audience: School social workers

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify how kids and teens can be victimized online and to recognize signs of victimization.
  • Participants will be able to explain how to make a report and have an informed discussion with kids or teens.
  • Participants will be able to list two online exploitation prevention resources for K-12 school staff, students, and/or families and will be able to apply best practices in their own school settings for how to support those who have been victimized.
