The Power of Expressive Arts: Make Stuff. Feel Better.

Wednesday, September 17, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Too often social workers are overworked, overlooked, and underappreciated. The needs of our clients can be demanding, and we give them everything that we can to ensure they can live their best lives. Expressive arts can be an easy way to relax, refuel and recharge. Creative expression can open up perspective, create opportunities for creative problem solving, and tap into thoughts and feelings that have once been unable to be processed. Through this hands-on workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice simple, creative activities that can be used to spark conversation, discover strengths, and have a visual reminder of the things that they are grateful for. Participants will be able to understand how expressive arts tap into the creative parts of the brain and allow for the externalization of emotions, which increases the ability to communicate inner thoughts and feelings. These simple, creative activities can be applied to work being done with students, staff, and families within the educational settings.

Learning Goal/Objective #1Attendees will participate in expressive art activities and understand how to apply these activities to their personal and professional lives.

Learning Goal/Objective #2Attendees will discover how creative expression can enhance self-care for themselves and the clients they serve.

Learning Goal/Objective #3Attendees will learn how mindfulness and expressive arts can spark different ways of thinking about problems in an individual's life and have safe, creative ways to begin those conversations.
