This course (1 hour Live Webinar, Synchronous Distance Learning) will be focused on Autism Spectrum Disroder and school social work competency. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder which currently affects 1 in 36 individuals in the United States. Autism manifests as symptoms that impact the areas of communication, social interaction, and behavior (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Symptoms may create a need for social work support in school. School social workers must be knowledgeable about autism as well as how to best support autistic students. This workshop will provide an overview on autism as well as learning competencies for school social workers.
Learning Objectives:
Goal 1: Participants will review current information on autism, including symptoms and prevalence.
Goal 2: Participants will review a research study on autism knowledge among school social workers.
Goal 3: Participants will gain recommended learning competencies to improve upon practice knowledge when serving autistic students.
