Webinar: Navigating Immigration: How School Social Workers Can Support Students & Families

This workshop (1 hour Live Webinar, Synchronous Distance Learning) will look at empowering school social workers with the information and resources to assist schools and communities to navigate the challenges associated with immigration.  Participants will come away with an understanding of federal and state immigration policies as well as learn about available resources that can be shared with students, families, and educators.   

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will recognize key terms and factors related to the immigration crisis in the United States. 
  2. Participants will describe relevant legal proceedings, Executive Orders, federal and state legislation, and case law focused on immigration policies.   
  3. Participants will identify resources that school social workers can share with students, families and educators about immigration, deportation, and other issues.  

Speakers:  

Dra. Maria Robles Sinkule, DSW, LCSW, PEL:SSW 

Dra. Maria Robles Sinkule is in her 17th year as a school social worker in the northwest suburbs of Illinois. Additionally, she has worked in early intervention as a bilingual social worker and as an adjunct instructor at Aurora University and the University of Illinois Chicago. Dra. Robles Sinkule is the Past President of the Illinois Association of School Social Workers. She received her Doctorate in Social Work from Aurora University in May 2020.

Many state licensing boards impose specific limitations on course content, distance education, or other elements of continuing education, even when courses are taken from approved providers. School Social Work Association of America, 1789, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. School Social Work Association of America maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 7/27/2023-7/27/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 1 CE continuing education credit. 

Certificates will be emailed to participants upon successful completion of the webinar and completion of the course evaluation. Participants must stay the entire length of the webinar and complete the evaluation to receive credit. No assignments will be required for this course. System Requirements-- Participants must have a computer and audio to participate in the webinar. Attending by phone is strongly discouraged and may result in not receiving CEs.
